Annuals are herbaceous flowering plants that will bloom their little hearts out from late spring (after we are clear of frost) through fall's first frost. Annuals are not hardy in our zone and need to be replanted yearly. They will give you glorious color from spring to fall, but are typically not tough enough to withstand a killing frost. Tropicals, like annuals, cannot handle the cold New England temperatures of New England either. The main difference between annuals and tropicals, is that annuals are usually killed by the first frost, whereas most tropicals can typically survive a frost or two.

Tropicals, unlike annuals, can be over-wintered with the proper care. If relocated prior to the fall frost, Tropicals can survive the winter indoors in a sunny widow or warm room with bright light. They may not thrive in these less than ideal conditions, but they can survive. Please keep in mind that by moving your tropicals inside, you run the risk of bringing some undesirable guests (i.e. insects or diseases) that may be hidden on the plant, or in the soil, into your home.
